lyrics

We come out of the womb
With skewed cognition as a precondition
Every decision an equation
Between desire and inhibition

Rewind the tape to day one
And would your life have played out any different?

It calls into question how to exercise judgment
Degrees of free will, the concept of a subject
It’s easy assuming you’re ‘compos mentis’
A loose definition that’s suspect at best
I’m tempted to guess at my alleged enemy’s intent
But I know I’m better off to find out what they meant
Or what elements may’ve made them that way
An antidote to the temper of the day

What a quaint idea, but it doesn’t work society wide

Or so we might conclude from the clamour of the constant outcry

We’re still answering the biggest questions
It’s natural that we might fall either side
But the shapes assume so many dimensions
It’s dependent on where you draw the lines…

Lucky you’re a perfect arbiter of wrong and right,
Base strategies on fallacies
Repel the other side
Quixotic and neurotic, yet somehow a perfect model for modern negotiation

On active lookout for signs of violation

I don’t know about you, but it’s like a hall of mirrors in my head
But I know, despite all my uncertainty, admitting fallibility moves me as close to sanity as I can get

I see it
Encouraged
Institutionally
Mania

We exalt like gold medallists
Our leading pop polemicists

It’s trickled down and magnified and now not only am I your opponent,
I’m your wicked, screaming, arch nemesis

You think I’m wrong about X and Y, it’s black and white
And that gives you a green light for you to see red

I wish you’d recognise some shades of grey
And break down all these fortresses

I don’t know about you, but it’s like a hall of mirrors in my head
But I know, despite all my uncertainty, admitting fallibility moves me as close to sanity as I can get
I see it
Consuming
The better part of us
Mania

I don’t know about you, but it’s like a hall of mirrors in my head
But I know, despite all my uncertainty, admitting fallibility moves me as close to sanity as I can get

Mindreading, magnifying, twisting and dichotomising,
It weakens, disorders and deranges us to the point of mania
